Comment:

I am repeating this posted in the past july but I added more what I did lately with the PC.
Formatted, reinstalled Windows 2000. And then got online and downloaded IE sp1 ,service pack 4 ,restarted with succes and then the last "Update rollup 1 for Windows 2000 service pack 4 (kb891861) that had c:a 32 mb. It restarted and load bar during start got stuck half way. Then blue screen came up telling try another video card , update bios, disable chache or so . Or safe mode.
ntoskrnl.exe was mentioned. I could not even use safe mode or repair with cd. Still blue screen firmly. Did not waste any time and formatted it ,and reinstalled Windows again. It was fine. I thought I was careless of some reason. Tried it again after I installed video, sound, modem and IP program very carefully. After updated the same file, and then again blue screen to my agony. Third and last attempt was the newest video driver driver nvidia 77,72 installed instead of the original videodriver that came with video card. Nope blue screen again!
Repeated the whole process, and I am staying away from Update rollup 1 for Windows 2000 service pack 4 .I even updated the latest video driver and keep autoupdate shut off for now. This is sata drive Maxtor 60gb med sata driver Silicon Image SiI 3x12 . Had no problem in one whole year and never had update roll up then to my lucky star, otherwise I would lose all files in it if I updated with it!
Can anyone explain the horrible phenomenon? I have Pny Geoforce 6600GT AGP ,(using driver nvidia 6693). moderboard Asus A7N8X-E-Deluxe ,Cpu xp3200. 2x256mb PC3200.
I also updated the other older hd (ide) connected to this mother board . It took "Update rollup 1 for Windows 2000 service pack 4 (kb891861) without any problem. Right now I am using the old hd with Windows 2000 fully updated until the problem with sata hd situation. Another thing is when running Sata hd , I can see in drive d (ide drive). But when I change bios setting to boot with ide drive, and running ide drive, then sata drive is not visible in "My computer"!
Both Sata and Ide hd has identical installed software from video to Ip with Windows 2000. But Ide hd has everything updated from Microsoft.
Sata hd that is working fine but, has only sp4, IE6 for now.
What do you say?
Reply 1:
Have you checked to see if you need to update your computer's BIOS?
Also, some machines have a setting for SATA drives that you can switch it to a "Combination" mode so it functions more like an older IDE drive - which sounds like might be just what you're looking for.

You might also check to see if your SATA drive needs firmware updates as well...

My reply of today:
I updated bios without problem and now IDE hd can see SATA hd.
Downloaded the latest file from ASUS (si3112r) and reinstalled SATA hd without problem with the same floppy disk (sata driver as I mentioned the above).
Right clicked MY COMPUTER ,clicked up, SCSI and RAID controller, clicked update driver that I clicked on the file I downloaded.
Restarted ,but never loaded windows, the loading bar was stuck half way. Nothing happened for ten minutes. I have Maxtor 60gb SATA hd.
I am using IDE hd for everyday until I get SATA hd working right. What did I do wrong?

I deleted si3112r in system32 while I was on the IDE harddrive and went into SATA hd and saw that was si3112 and si3112r. Figured r stand for raid and I am not using raid.
Then I could boot up SATA now.
I am crossing finger when I install "Update rollup 1 for Windows 2000 service pack 4 (kb891861) tomorrow night. Gotta sleep now!

Blue screen again! Despite updated bios and sata driver. I am giving up and won't download anymore from Microsoft beyond service pack 4 !
