Comment:

When I shutdown/restart win2k it takes several minutes. Sometimes it wont shutdown/restart at all and I have to switch off manually.

I know its a very generalized question but what might me causing this. I got Service Pack 1 if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance,

elziko

Many things can cause this situation

the most common are
1. bad drivers for a peice of hardware
2. another user is attached to your machine
3. your machine is waiting to hear from another machine
4. an application either in the foreground or background is not closeing down properly
5. their may be a peice of icompatable hardware in your system
6. sixth and final is that is it another great Microsoft product 8-}

suggestions are
run a a disk defrag on your machine
get rid of old Apps you do not use
run virus scan
as a last resort you might whant to consider rebuilding the whole machine from a format C:

best of luck

Its a fresh install with very few apps installed.

However I do have an "unknown" device which is a graphics tablet that I haven't got round to getting win2k drivers for yet.

Probably a good place to start?

Cheers

I'd say check for BIOS upgrades first. There free, easy and effective. They're just not without risk, that's all. The risk of failure is very small. It are just the fatal consequences when something _does_ go wrong that scare people.

I have shutdown/restart boo hoo as well...

My pc shutdowns so quickly I can't believe it's healty. It's not I discovered the next time I started windows 2k: it would not start anymore - got a blue screen saying the SOFTWARE hive of the regisrty was corrupt.
After a chkdsk from the recovery console I could login again but got the message the user profile was corrupt.

Something wrong with shutdown ?

I don't have SP1 installed yet

I have a comp next to me that won't shutdown OR restart either in win2k or winme.. it stops with a BLACK screen and a blinking doscursor... the microsoft kb says its because it can't cope with the fast harddrive and a fix will be out in sp2 (doh) and a non-regression-tested fix is available from ms support - but that COSTS MONEY! WTF?
