Hi, I have this error on my internet. I am sure its a corrupted system file because once i log on to a website..it takes ages and then says res://C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SHDOCLC.DLL/dnserror.htm

So, is it possible to download a similar file and replace it or what should i do. Thanx.

PS. this file has version 5.0.2920.0

Hi, there is nothing wrong with the file. You just have to check your DNS setting. Looks like u havent configured the nameservers to be used, or if your ISP provides those DHCP, you should probably call him to get the IPs of DNS servers.

No, i dont think the problem is with isp or ip or dns. I think its to do with that file....i read about it in the internet. The connection is ok, i have been using it for a long time and i didnt have a problem with it until recently i had this problem which slowed the internet a lot,..its unusual.
Please...any other help would be appreciated,.

um...
res://C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SHDOCLC.DLL/dnserror.htm is what it says when you cannot, are not, or are going to a website that is not connected to the internet. Internet access goes down all the time. Call your ISP. Nothing is wrong with the file, kinda trying not to laugh. :)

If it's slowing the internet, then you might have a loose connection, bad cable, card could be slipping out, etc... Try those first, then spend the 30 minutes it takes hanging on the phone to talk to someone at your ISP.

You can always replace the file, wouldn't hurt? Just extract a new copy from your OS CD.
You are exactly right in your last post. Bad code and trojans can cause this to happen. Here is a link that should tell you how to solve your problem and why it has happened.

Good Luck.

If it is a trojan, this won't fix it anyhow. You'll need to get a trojan scanner, and most virus scanners (Norton, McAfee, most common anyway) don't do a real good job on detection of trojans.

Like I said, if it's a trojan, replacing the .dll file will only help until you reboot, then just get infected again. But, seriously, this message also comes up any time you cannot get onto the internet. It is also a DEFAULT error for IE when it can't find anything to talk to. So... your pick. Nasty trojan, isp problem. Either or, could be both. Get a trojan scanner just to be sure. And no, just replacing the file, if you want to try it, just to see, will not hurt anything. Rename the old file .bak (instead of .dll) and install one off the OS's CD. If, for some odd reason, it does mess up, just delete the new one, and rename the old one back to .dll
