Hi all,
i have recently been experiencing problems when surfing the net that have occured ever since i upgraded my OS fomr windows 98 to windows 2000. I am finding that i can be surfing the net for around 20-30mins then all of a sudden i will click a link to a page or type in a URL address e.g www.google.co.uk and i will be taken to a page "this page can not be displayed" which has the URL of res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#http://google.co.uk. I have up to date SP packs up to 4 for my windows 2000 and run off a dial up connection with uk2net as my ISP. I know that it is not the modem or the ISP as i have tried both on my other PC and it works fine. I have tried searching for this file shdoclc.dll and it finds 2 results i tried to rename the old one and replace it with the latest version to see if this has any effect but i cant as the file is in use. This is really driving me up the wall PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!

I doubt you need to worry about the DLL file. All this is doing is providing the "Page Not Displayed" error page. I know this sounds obvious but have you checked whether you have been disconnected from your dialup connection? (That is, when you see this page.)

Hace you checked lately for viruses or trojans? Also, do you have a firewall? Apart from these suggestions, I'm pretty clueless...

Anyone else got any suggestions?

Try searching for malware with either Ad-Aware or Spybot Search & Destroy. BTW, this is a completely wild guess!

And another thing: try using a different web browser, such as Mozilla Firefox.

I have had the same problem since last night. I downloaded a file at

http://www.new.net/support/uninstall4_80.exe

It solved the problem temporarily (2 hours) but the problem came back. I think it's a new parasite. I'm actually typing this message from my sister's email because I can't access my hotmail account! So much for the $100 Platinum Internet security package we bought three days ago.

If anyone knows of a patch that will fix this problem can you let me know?

Thanks

Brad

I've had the same problem recently. I found no resolution other than installing Mozilla 1.6.

If you have RealPlayer 8 or later, try browsing webpages through there, it worked for me. It's no solution but it's a start.

Further, I've run CWShredder, Spybot, HijackThis, Trend Micro Housecall, Norton Anti-Virus all to no avail.

I've also done my fair share of searching the net which hasn't helped to cure the issue. At least the problem is being logged for others who experience it. It is a documented issue. I've also read through a Microsoft help page which did nothing to alleviate the problem.

I've also repaired IE6, updated with Service Pack 1, reinstalled it. I've used XPs System Restore facility.

All to no avail. IE stopped working in an instant... and after 12 hours troubleshooting I'd had enough!

Go Mozilla go...
