I have a 2k pro machine that i am trying to get files off of with a share-there is no windows server, i'm just trying to connect with my 98 machine, but get a message that I need a password for the \\2KPC\IPC$--the IPC$ folder doesn't exist, and if you look on MS knowledge base you find that your supposed to turn on Netlogin, but i get an error trying to start that saying it needs a domain--any way to start it and get to the files?

This question is asked ALL THE TIME. It's got to be the #1 question in here. Do a search and you'll find a million answers.

Short answer - Create a user account on the w2k machine that matches the username and password used by the 98 machine.

This is an interesting problem, i have seen the ipc$ folder before while trying to play hack into friends comp at school on out network we designed. IPC$ is a hidden shared folder. One thing u can do is to get your win 98 machined ip address ok...done
Then go to start run and type mmc, this will give u the windows console from there click console add snipit then a window will pop up click add then select shares. Ok now it will ask u for the comp name but instead type the ip address. now click done then u will be back to the main screen click on the share folder and u will see a selection of all ur hidden and unhidden shares on the win 98 machine. now just open a my computer menu type in \\ipaddress\IPC$ .... Of coarse u put ur win 98 ip in there. If u get blocked then just create ur own shared on the other machine by right clicking the share folder and select add share and follow the steps and ur done.
Let me know how it works out thanks

Instead of practicing hacking in school, maybe you should have paid more attention during spelling class.
