Comment:

I have a network of 7 PC's.Out of these 6 PC's are loaded with Windows ME.And 1 PC is loaded with Windows 2000 Pro. SP3.
I want to know how to share only a folder in the local hard drive without any password,so that all the other PC's having Windows ME can access only the folder and it's contents on the PC having Windows 2000.Whenever I create a folder and try sharing it on the network I get a error sating that "\\Comp1 is not accessable.
No permission to access resource"
Waiting for some posts......
Thanks in advance....

Pranav.

Hi, do you have file and print sharing enabled?

Add a group to the share permissions called 'Everyone' and give it 'Full Control' access.

Is this part of a Domain or Workgroup? Have you tried pinging the Win2k machine by name from another computer.

Yeah but although you can ping, have you tried by name? Have you run the network id in control panel?

Thanks for the quick reply.I did not run the Netwrok ID wizard because I did not think it is necessary to do so as the computer is already the part of a network as other machines can see this machine successfully, but only are not able to access the machine.
I will run the network identification wizard though and let you know the results...
Bye for now...

Ok, got your answer.

Be sure that the credentials you are using are added to the local users on that workstation. So if your logging onto a windows ME system as John, be sure that user in added to that windows 2000 workstation. Sounds silly, but is your answer!!

Joeteck is right. Another way to allow all users on your mini-network to access the shared file with no password required would be to enable the Guest account and set the password as blank. Then go into your Local Security Settings, under Local Policies, Security Options and the first line should be "Additional restrictions for anonymous connections". Change the policy setting for this to "None, Rely on default permissions".

This allows all users on your network to access your W2K PC and it's shared files. This eliminates the need to add the users of the Windows ME PCs as local accounts to your W2K PC. However, this is a security risk since your Guest account is now activated and has a blank password.

John, when I followed Joetech's idea I was able to access the Win2K machine all right. But it is not logical to add all the other 6 users to the users as the Win2k machine. When I follow your idea, and try to access files from other computer,i am prompted for a password, even if I have left the passworf of Guest account blank. When I try to keep blank and press Enter I get a error message saying that it is wrong.
What could be the reason?
Waiting for your reply,
Thanks once again,
Pranav

Try going to the permissions menu in the folder properties and adding "Network". That worked for me, goodluck.
