Shared printer jobs only get to 4 bytes

I've got two Win2k professional machines connected to a switch. Sharing folders works just fine; all data transfer between the computers works just fine. Except: I have a USB printer (Lexmark X73) connected to one of the computers; I share it with the other. But, whenever a print job is sent from the other computer, it hangs at 4 bytes. If I click on the Lexmark X73 in Start->Settings->Printers, I get a table like this:

(the name of the file) Printing (originating username) (number of pages) 4 bytes/(file size) (submission time) USB001

For a couple of minutes, there's a lot of network traffic (according to the little systray network monitor icon); but, it just stays at 4 bytes. I also cannot Cancel, Pause, or Resume the print job. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Extra relevant info:
1. OS: Win2k w/SP2 (both computers)
2. Network: 10/100Mbps autosensing switch (has always worked fine with the following hybrid config.), 100Mbps from printer-hosting computer to switch, 10Mbps from other computer to switch; all TCP/IP; all services seem to work fine except printer sharing
3. Lexmark's web site repeatedly states that printing across a network is "not supported"; don't know if that means it's missing from the drivers (or if it's even something that's in the drivers) or what

I don't know precisely what a GDI printer is. Here's some info that might be relevant:

1. It's not a postscript printer
2. The format it prints to is its own special control language (LEMF); printing via normal GDI calls yields a print job in this format, which can be saved to disk (via Print to File or choosing FILE: as the port for the printer), transferred from the "other" computer to the printer-hosting computer, and then printed (with PRNter; probably with copy too, but I'm too lazy for that).

Installing it:
On the computer that the printer is connected to, I had to run a setup program.

On the other computer, I just went to My Network Places, found the printer-hosting computer, connected to it, right-clicked on the printer, and clicked "Connect." Then, Win2k did its thing, copying over some driver files (config windows look identical to those on the printer-hosting machine + "other" computer can print to file just fine with the driver, so it doesn't seem to be the problem).

If I try to use "Add Printer" on it on the other computer, it just will not find it; I've tried all of the networked printer options that I could locate (Tried using a local printer with a TCP/IP port; tried finding it on the network via NetBIOS name; tried finding it on the network via IP address; nothing finds it (most things don't even try --> no network traffic)).

I am having the exact same problem. I also have 2 W2K PC connected via hub with the first PC having the Lexmark X83 connected via USB. I selected "add Printer" from the second and it "seems" to create the printer fine. When you print to it you get 4 bytes in the queue and nothing else happens.
