Comment:

In attempting to install Win2k off the CD, I eventually get an error saying "File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 4. Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit."

What's the deal? I've seen mention of error code 7 for XP installs, but I can't find this error on MS support site (which is a joke) or TechNet. Any ideas?

Try starting a new post and telling us WHEN you get the error code (the install process is kinda long). Also, have you checked to make sure your hardware is Windows 2000 compliant???

I suggest you remove any extra hardware, then try to install the OS, if it works, you can then feed back in the hardware....

Error Code "(0x4, 0x1, 0, 0)" During Windows 2000 Setup

Error Code "(0x4, 0x1, 0, 0)" During Windows 2000 Setup (Q226361)

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows 2000 , Advanced Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 , Datacenter Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 , Professional
Microsoft Windows 2000 , Server

SYMPTOMS
When you start Setup, you may receive the following error message:
Setup has encountered a fatal error that prevents it from
continuing.

Contact your product support representative for assistance. The
following status will assist them in diagnosing the problem.

(0x4, 0x1, 0, 0)

Setup cannot continue. Power down or reboot your computer now.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the drives on your computer are damaged
or not operating properly, so that Setup cannot properly or reliably
enumerate all the drives in the computer. This can also be caused by
having two or more disks that contain the same disk signature or two
or more RAW disks whose Master Boot Record (MBR) checksums are
identical.

RESOLUTION
To help determine which drive is causing the problem:
Remove all drives from the computer that are not necessary during
Windows 2000 installation except for the boot and system drive(s).

On a single-drive computer, use a different drive or check the
hardware jumper settings, BIOS settings, cabling, and termination,
and then run Setup again. For information about these
hardware-related tasks, please consult your computer's
documentation.

If the drive is new (never formatted), try low-level formatting
it, and then use the MS-DOS or Windows Fdisk tool to partition the
drive before running Setup. You can delete and re-create
partitions if you want when Setup proceeds.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft
products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION
Although this error code is not usually associated with a
boot-sector virus, you may want to view the following article in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base:

I got this too, and no one on any message board I searched had a good solution, Specially Microsoft. I even tried a "remake the Startup Disks" trick I read about but that didn't solve it. And it's not from a virus.

I eventually got Win2K to install after I did two things. I replaced two older 64M Ram chips with a new 256M chip. I also installed Win98 on the pc, and then Win2K on top of that.

I don't know if there was a memory problem or if just installing Win98 before 2K solved it, but Win2K is now installed on the pc.

Of course, if you don't have a copy of 98 still lying around the 2nd step won't help, and you may have to go out and buy some new memory to test the first step as well.

Sorry I couldn't nail it down to just one fix but I hope this helps anyone else who encounters this Microsoft "feature".

Now I'm really confused. I'm doing (trying) a clean install of XP Home and get the same message as mentioned "Unable to load setupdd.sys error number 4. Press any key to shout down yada yada yada" Then it never shuts down so you have to reboot or turn it off. The system hardware consist of:
40 Samsung HD
Intel MB D845WN
P4 1.6
Asus AGP 7100 (NVidia GForce 2)
Richoh CD/RW
2/ 256 PC133 memory wafers
I have tried formating and installing ME, Win98SE. I've done the OPK, since it's an OEM version of XP. I've tried the 6 installation disks for XP. I've tried booting from the CD with the OEM cd and the preinstallation setup disk for system builders and cannot get XP, Win 98 or ME to install. Win98 and ME do get all the way through the initial install and does the reboot then gives yet another error message. I'm about to throw a glass of water in it! Any help would be appreciated.
