No, in your case you really only need one NIC card in each machine, and you don't need a router. Use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to share your cable modem. Look in "Help", in either Win2000 or Win ME for insructions on how to setup ICS. It's simple, but make sure you follow the directions exactly!

http://www.practicallynetworked.com

- sharing section; covers all aspects ICS and more. Probaly one of the best ICS sites around - with some useful links.

http://www.dslreports.com

relates/refers to DSL, but most applies equally to cable.

A search in google.com for:

sharing cable-modem connection

will bury you with useful how to sites...

Using the ICS option (only) you would need a hub. But this option requires the 'host' system (the PC that has ICS configured) must be switched on to provide www access to the other (client) PCs...

If you use an access router (and this approach removes the need to configure/use ICS) then only the PC you want to use on the www at that moment need be switched on - provided the cable/DSL service is connected/running OK (and the access router too...).

SMC make a Barracuda access router that gets excellent reports; it offers cable/DSL, ISDN - and DUN (modem) sharing. I think Netgear offer similar; possibly D-link too.

SMC (http://www.smc.com) item also includes a printer-sharing facility (for one printer) - across your LAN.

I tend to avoid Linksys kit; there seem to be frequent problems with some of it in terms of compatabilty etc. with other kit/some OS's... (although some folks will swear by it)?
