Hello. My problem is that, whenever the machine boots up, it displays an automatic shutdown box before logon (similar to the box seen with NLTEST, or NT4's SHUTDOWN command). This box claims that the system is being shut down by NTAuthority\System, and lists a reason as follows:

The system is shutting down because C:\WINNT\system32\services.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code 128. Your system will shut down and reboot.

There is no way to even logon!

Already tried the following:

Microsoft Knowledge Base
Last Known Good Configuration
Emergency Repair Process
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Replacing Services.exe through the Recovery Console

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your problem is ususally the result of a corrupt event log. Event logs are .Evt files located at C:\WINNT\system32\config\

Try this method by booting to the Recovery Console and rename the files. To get to it, you need to boot from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM and press F10 at the Welcome screen, or Press Repair and Console. When you restart, new log files will be created. That should fix your problem I hope. Good luck!
