Hello all,
I decided to reboot my Windows 2000 server (v 5.0 build 1295 service pak 4) this evening b/c the taskbar had been indicating for awhile that patches needed to be fully installed.
I don't know what was installed, but following the reboot, cpu utilization is a constant 100% and services.exe is running fulltime, overtime.
In my logs I notice that my APC service (software for auto-communication with UPS system) does not start, event viewer says it is hanging.
When I list out my services I note that the system is trying to stop a service or two (status "Stopping") while trying to start the APC software (status "Starting"). I assume this may be one of the reasons for services.exe working so hard?
Anyway, wondering if you have advice on this. Production server here, so uptime is crucial. apps are web-based and performance at this time is VERY SLOW. I'm a db/web developer, server admin is one of my hats, but, as you see, I'm a bit rusty in this area.
I looked at add/remove programs and noted several KB hotfixes as well as Service Pack 4 rollup. Only problem is I don't know how to determine which hotfix/spak update was installed this evening when I rebooted.
Anyone seen this issue and can provide a way out?
Thanks for your time.
Cheers,
Babbitt

The backup folders for the hotfixes are in WINNT - explorer in details view will show the date/time on the folders, sort into date order by clicking on the column heading. You'll see the fix name is included in the folder name.

Well we had the same problem show up on 5 different servers in 3 states. Scared the crap out of us and after much time we corrected the issue. These where Oracle DB servers with Terminal Sessions. It seems to passably be an issue with the windows update. Here's what "WE" did to correct- boot into safe mode disable any services that you noted as "hanging" starting or stopping. Next Set the Automatic Updates service to Automatic, Set Background Intelligent Agent to Automatic, set windows installer to automatic. Now reboot. Run windows update and install all patches hotfixes etc.. We went ahead an removed/reloaded the APC software also. You can set the installer service back to manual and any other services that you disabled back to there desired state
This corrected the problem for us and our systems. Hope this helps.
