I see that servie pack 3 is at windows update... Before I install, I'd like some feedback on whether or not to do it. If you guys have had any problems or not with it. thanks in advance.

i've installed it on two office machines and had no problems. other message boards that i've read have also suggested that it doesn't usually stuff boxes.
i'm installing it on five more office machines tomorrow... i'll let you know more then.

When you get a new system on the Dell web site, when you pick the OS, they give you the option of win2k SP2 or 3. That tells me something.

we've installed sp 3 on 1 machine, but this hasn't been tested under our student environment yet, B4 we ran nt4 so still getting use to Win2K

Unless you have specific problems with your W2K workstation that SP3 addresses DO NOT INSTALL. Especially DO NOT INSTALL for any version of W2K server. SP2 for W2K is very stable for both Pro and Server models. I'd side with DAN. I've got 2 Dell servers. Dell tech support dosen't even recommend SP3. And even if you did install SP3 on Dell system and you call Dell support, they would tell you to call Microsoft. What does that tell you.

I recently had Windows 2000 pro on my Raid server (4 drives in a type 1 array). I installed Windows 2000 pro service pack 3--and now, when I choose "reboot" or "shutdown" the computer goes to a blank, black screen with a single blinking cursur at the top of the screen--and hangs. I am forced, then, to manually shutdown or re-start. Any info on this problem? Anybody else with this problem, too?

Everything I hear about SP3 tells me to stay away from it, especially since we are in a business environment, where stability is by far the most important factor, and we can't afford to tinker with it to get it working. And the fact that SOME sites are not having trouble with it doesn't help much.

I use SP2 but a friend installed SP3 and told me never to bother with it, since it quietly communicates with those lovely people at licensing.microsoft.com even though you don't get the option to disallow it. Since he was testing the Win2k system in a dev environment using someone else's copy (this was to be removed in a month) it informed them he was using an unlicensed copy as that copy had been scripted to not require product code on install.
Stick with SP2...

SP3 has a network drive locking issue that I cannot find a fix for any where. Basically if I use office 2000 to access any files on a AS400 networked drive I cannot access the files in Exel or save them in word, I can however save them locally then copy and paste them to the network drive. Looks like I am going to have to regress service packs on my 3 test machine -

When SP3 is installed you cannot temporarily unlock any Iomega zip disk. It still reads as (empty) till you permanently remove the lock and then eject the disk and reinsert it. When I went back to SP2--not a problem.
