Hey guys, need a little help here. My Dad's Dell laptop (Win2k) is acting up with odd error messages when he tries to install SP3 (he's running SP1 right now). When I try and install SP3, it starts to install then pops up with this error message:

SERVICE PACK #3 SETUP ERROR
The File c:\program files\outlook express\wabmig.exe is open or in use by another application.

Close all other applications and then click retry.

Of course, I have eliminated everything in the system tray and all the processes that it would let me remove. This is somewhat puzzling, and I wonder if it's not somehow an Office2k issue. Office2k is tending to act up whenever you try and update it (not accepting the original CDs).

Either way I'd like some advice...thanks!

Sounds like you have a W32 Leave Worm. I would update your Anti-Virus Software and run virus scan or try the removal instructions at Symantec (listed below).

Look here for removal:

Additional note:
I would strongly recommend updateing to Service Pack 2 first and then follow up with three. I have seen multiple issues with going from SP1 to SP3 on various machines. Just a though.

Okay, that sounds good about the Service packs thing. I'm not too sure it's a virus, since he's got NAV Corporate with 1.9.2003 definitions. The software is a little old (2000), but I don't know if that would be an issue.

I'm going to try those registry strings mentioned in that link you sent me to see if it is indeed a virus.

I've just confirmed that it isn't the W32 Leave Worm. That is, unless it's a different strain. None of the characteristic registry settings have been done to the machine.

I tried running Service Pack 3 (this time from the full install...100MB+) and I got a new error message, similar to the one I mentioned above, however it mentions NetMeeting being used, when it doesn't seem to be. This is really driving me nuts, so any opinions would be appreciated!

I had the same netmeeting error message popup on me again, so I wrote it down:

"The File c:\program files\netmeeting\nmcom.dll is open or in use by another application."

The funny thing is that this time I ran the SP3 update in Safe Mode, and there wasn't anything in the system tray, and here's a listing of what processes were running at the time:

System idle
System
SMSS.EXE
CSRSS.EXE
SERVICES.EXE
LSASS.EXE
EXPLORER.EXE
update.exe
SVCHOST.EXE
TASKMGR.EXE
W2KSP3.EXE

I don't see anything there related to netmeeting...:p
