Subject: Serial / Com port busy
OS: Windows ME

Comment:

I've installed some software onto a Sony Vaio laptop running windows 2000 that monitors machinery, but it keeps telling me that the COM port is in use by another program.

I've installed the same software on other windows 2000 PCs so I know that the software is compatible.

How can I fid out what program is accessing this com port?

Any advice gratefully received!

Your modem may be using the Com port. You should be able to use 2 com ports. The default port is probably the same one your modem uses. See if you can change which com port you can use. Also boot to the BIOS to see if both com port are enabled. The usual seting is Auto or disabled.
