Seeking 3rd party Registry Editor or Checker/Scanner that will work with the registry hive files of installations of Windows other than the one that is currently running. In other words I want to be able to load and work on hive files other than those of the active registry the way you can with regedt32.

I have what may be a corrupt registry problem. I have the hard drive of the system in question hooked up as a 2nd drive of a working Win2K system and I can access all the files on it (CHKDSK is clean). When I use regedt32 to load the 'system' registry file from that drive (as I've done before with other cases), I get "Registry Editor could not accomplish the requested operation". Not very helpful or informative.

I get the same thing trying to load the NTUSER.DAT file into the LOCAL_USER tree. Interestingly, if I copy these files to my "C" drive and load them from there, I don't get an error message but there is nothing in the created key (it's a folder with no "+" sign beside it and nothing happens when you click on it).

Surely there must be some piece of software that will scan and check these files for consistency, perhaps repair them or let me edit them. Many thanks for any tips.
