I am trying to install security updates in my IBM Thinkpad A22m laptop (Windows 2000 Pro SP4). Two of the updates will not install - they both hang on the "Checking for necessary disc space" message. These are 904706 (DirectX) and 925398 (Media Player 6.4). Since they are both media related, I am thinking the problem may be something to do with the DVD drive or the DVDExpress software, because the updates install without problem on other machines with otherwise similar software, but without DVD. I can't find anything in the Microsoft documentation about this. Would it do the job if I simply replace the relevant files from the updates manually (quartz.dll from 904706, and dxmasf.dll and strmdll.dll from 925398) and perhaps re-register them with regsvr32?

How much disk space do you have free? Have you tried a defrag and installing the updates one at a time? Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

There is still 14.5GB free on the 20GB HD. Space is definitely not the problem! The disc space message just happens to be the one showing when it hangs.
