"329170: Sercurity Update" causes my non-networked home computer to take a long time (70 seconds) to logoff OR shutdown. (I KNOW that update is the cause since the problem disappears when the update is uninstalled.)

The Event Log records this error upon shutdown/logoff "Windows cannot unload your registry file. If you have a romaing profile, your settings are not replicated...." Event ID is 1000.

Two Questions: How critical is the update? If I reinstall the update, is there a way to prevent the problem?

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The latest service pack IS the problem!!!

All have service packs installed EXCEPT the one that causes the aformentioned problem.

I guess I'll wait for Service Pack 4.

I'm having similar problems; I'm not sure if it's related or not but...
I have 3 Windows 2000 Professional machines on two Dell Dimension L series desktops and one HP Omnibook laptop that will not even install that security update (329170) and one other update. Two of the machines (one desktop and the laptop) also have shutdown/reboot problems. All service packs, critical updates, and recommended updates are installed, but these two security updates will not. They download ok and start installing, but then the install progress box disappears and the Windows Update page states that these two security updates weren't installed:
329170
Q328310
It is always the same two security updates for each machine. I have had this problem on 3 different computers so far and I expect there to be more as I go through each employee's machine. All three machines are running Windows 2000 Professional. I have attempted to install each security update separately, but I get the same result. I have disabled the realtime antivirus protection and attempted again and got the same results. I have run a repair of Windows 2000 Professional operating system and attempted again with the same results. I've downloaded and attempted to install the update from Microsoft's security knowledge base with similar results. For the shutdown/boot problem, Windows seems to shut down, but the machines themselves hang at a blank (black) screen and never reboot or shut down. Removing the power source(s) is the only way to completely shut them down. Removing the power source(s) and then powering up again does not seem to cause any errors on the following startup. In the past, a Windows Update install will fix this kind of problem, but in this case, it has not (or at least hasn't yet). Are these two power down problems at all related to this failure to install the security updates? If not, what would cause these updates to not install properly? Is there another source for a fix for these power down issues besides the normal Windows Update fix? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
