Ok i have been reading alot of information about this but unsure what is the right option for me to choose. When I connect to the internet it says "svchost.exe has generated errors and will be shut down by windows and to restart it". Once that happens it restricts my use onthe net. What can i do to fix the problem??? and what is the cause of the problem? .

Also another error comes up saying An error has occured on this script page
line: 477
Char: 18
Error : the RPC server is unavailable
Code: 0
URL: http://desktop.kaaza.com/us/kmdstart.htm?country=au&client=kmd&ver=211&noad=0
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page.

I press yes. Does that solve the poblem? or is it related to the svchost.exe ?

Thank you guys for your time :)
Richard

This means you have been infected by the Blaster/RPC virus. This is the biggest Microsoft f*ckup. The best thing I would do is rebuild my PC. They say Get the patch and update vscan but that does not fix your problems. I would use SP3 or 4 and turn off your Server, Computer Browsing,Messanger, and RPC Services.

Hi,

I disagree with TSG. I have found that if you run the security patch from the Microsoft.com site, update your antivirus and run the W32.Blaster.Worm fix tool then all is OK. I have done this on many machines this week and all issues and signs of the virus have been removed.

Take these steps:
1. Download and run the MS security patch from http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/1/f/01fdd40f-efc5-433d-8ad2-b4b9d42049d5/Windows2000-KB823980-x86-ENU.exe
(Note: you must have at least SP2 for this to run. If you don't then the best thing to do would be to install SP4 (http://download.microsoft.com/download/B/1/A/B1A2A4DF-CC8E-454B-AD9F-378143D77AEB/SP4Express_EN.exe) as this contains SP2 and SP3 anyway.

2. Update your AntiVirus definitions.

3. Download and run the FixBlast.exe tool from http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixBlast.exe

That's it!

Just to put my two cents in here... I have done all of the things that Chris said to do (and then some) and I am still having the svchost.exe problems. Taking the steps that he outlines will get rid of the worm, but it doesn't correct the damage to the RPC server that it has caused. Has anyone found a way to remedy the RPC and svchost problems short of formatting and doing a re-install?

installation of a firewall is needed as well. I installed Norton's personal firewall

I've installed the Norton Personal Firewall, but now what? The only difference it makes is that the other computers on my network can't share files, printers, or the net connection. I try to configure it to allow that, but it tells me that I'm not an administrator, even though I most certainly am. And how do you configure it to block the offending ports? I can't seem to figure out what they are...

Sorry if this is duplicated (Too bad all worm-related svchost/ msblast problems aren't in one message string.

THE FIX:
First go to www.microsoft.com and download the patch for the worm.

Then go here to read the steps:
http://www.sophos.com/support/disinfection/blastera.html

This will tell you how to rid the worm. You will need to search windows for the msblast file and delete it...........and do the same in your Registry. Follow the clear steps that the sophos.com site lays-out.

Then, your system should be ok. It worked for me.

If you are still having these errors, go to Start > Run, type in regedit and press OK.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. If you have an entry in there that says "windows auto update" with a value of "msblast.exe" then delete it, then close regedit and restart your system.

As I stated before, I've taken all of the steps to remove the worm. There is no trace of msblast on my system or in the registry, but Windows 2000 will no longer recognize my CD and DVD drives (they show up in CMOS though) and I have lost my admin privleges. In addition to that, I've got five instances of svchost.exe running, and I know for a fact that I usually only have one or two. On top of that, my internet connection is incredibly sluggish, but none of the machines that share my connection on the network are that way. I use my win2k boot disks to do an emergency repair, which seemed to work brilliantly, but the next time I shut down and restarted, it was back to the same old problems. Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry guys; The only true solution is reformatting; Hopefully you have restore disk that came with your system; thats if you bought a new system from compaq, dell, etc. Not bootleg systems-auctions. Then just reinstall your applications.

My system is back to working like a champ.

Hello, guys, and thanks,

Sorry but the problem is the same after I've installed Win2000 again, reformatting the disk. I've installed also Service Pack 4 and updated antivirus. No traces of virus, including msblast.

Please help, anyone have any idea?
