My Asus board is out for warr so using my new ECS K7VTA3 mainboard.
Works fine. USB card reader, USB printer,Floppy drive...everything works...EXCEPT odd thing with the scanner.
Its an HP4300C scanjet and I know for a fact it had problems even with my Asus board. (It had been running on that board but stopped). The scanner was getting a lamp error so I set it aside. I decided to go back and do some research yesterday to maybe try and fix it, so I plugged the scanner into the new ECS board and loaded drivers. When I click the scanner icon the scanner does nothing and no software pops up on screen but... the floppy drive is accessed and runs continuously until I stop the HP Scan software process in Task manager. Device mgr says its working ok. Still I uninstalled it and removed the software and tried again. Turned off all background programs and turned off virus protection and reinstalled drivers. Same result. Also tried via the scanner parallel port. Same thing. I would think the HP software center should at least pop up on screen even if the scanner doesnt work.... but it doesn't. Clicking the scanner Icon just causes the floppy to run and nothing else happens.
Real head scratcher.....???!!!
I checked IRQ sharing and there are no exclamation points indicating conflict.
There is a lot on IRQ 11 though. AC97 Audio, Nvidia Graphics card, 3 USB controllers, RhineII fast ethernet adapter. I'd still think the software window should at least pop up even if there is a hardware conflict (though none is indicated).
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

One issue you can check is the parallel port. Boot into the system BIOS and be sure the parallel port is enabled and set to the proper port type required for the scanner. Check your manual for the type of parallel port required.

Parallel port isn't an issue bcus it does the exact same thing with USB. Parallel port was just a test I did after the program was acting funky on USB. I also unplugged all USB devices except the scanner and it does the same thing. I even unplugged the scanner and tried to access the scanner program and it still activated the floppy but the scanner control center didn't open. The scanner program should at least pop up when I click the Icon but all that happens is the floppy runs. It's just software and until It tells the scanner to do something it doesn't know if it's connected or not. I don't see what the floppy has to do with anything or why it runs when I access the scanner software.
Sounds like an install problem to me but I uninstalled the software turned off all background programs and virus protection and re-installed it with the same results. I'm stumped.

I have an old Logitech PageScan Color that I won't give up. This scanner is finiky to install. The help files for the scanner instruct you to remove registry entries and reboot before attempting a re-install. I have had similar issues with a flatbed scanner also and with a modem that had fax capability. I suggest you uninstall all the software for this scanner. Reboot without the scanner connected. Do a file find from the start menu looking for HP*. and/or scan*. After that run Regcleaner4.3. This registry cleaner finds orphan registry entries. Once you remove part of the program there will be orphan files left. This utility is perfectly safe IMO and is freeware and is used by many folks here. Get it at: http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm

Here's a follow up. Good and bad.
Uninstalled Hp software again and searched for all files related to precisionscan, scan, scanjet, hpsj and hpsc. Found some remaining dll files and deleted. Unplugged scanner and booted into safe mode. Re-installed Hp software, shut down, plugged scanner in and re-booted.
Good:
The Copy (to printer)button on the scanner itself and Copy (to printer) Icon button both WORK now where before the program just hung and did nothing. Print quality of the scan isn't super with some dark lines here and there even on light settings but it's a start and at least I know the scanner physically works.Good: The Scan (to email) Setup button (ICON button)seems to work. Floppy DOES run for 2 secs for some reason then stops and then the button setup box pops up. Shows Opera and Outlook as options. Resolution:75 Type: True Color.
BAD: Scan (to file) button on the Scanner and the program Icon button both still don't work. Floppy drive still activates/runs continuously until I kill the hppsapp.exe process. The Scan program won't open up but that floppy drives sure hums along.
BAD: Scan/Send to (e-mail)button on the Scanner and the program Icon button both still don't work. Floppy drive activates/runs continuously until I kill the both hppsapp.exe and Sendto.exe processes. A box does open that says scanning to Outlook but the file/paper "transfer animation" isn't flying. It just sits there frozen. When I kill the hppsapp.exe the transfer animation starts flying as if transfer is taking place but the scanner does nothing and it eventually times out as Cannot find "LTXscan-make sure program is installed and working properly then shows a twain error. The error is probably bcus I'm killing the hppsapp.exe first before the Sendto.exe process. Either way... it's not working and the floppy runs till both apps are killed.
Used the recommended regcleaner program but this was a fresh install of w2k as of 2 wks ago and there are no old reg files found. Everything is current and no duplicates in the registry or apparent orphans on this partition.
Summary:
After removing the Hp software and remaining dll files, installing from safe mode only the COPY (to printer) utility works but not SCAN (to file)or SCAN (to email) and the floppy drive still activates and runs continuously on both of the latter applications but the LTX scanner program doesnt pop on screen...nor does outlook on Scan to e-mail.ANY additonal suggestions from anyone would be appreciated. I'm totally outta gas here.
Thanks a lot for everyones time.
Dave

This is from a prior reply by me.

Do you have any Symantec antivirus software installed on this machine? That could account for the floppy access.
This will find many more fragments then you would ever find manually. Deleting the entries as you did is good but only a start. Someone in the last few days posted a reply to another HP printer problem and listed a link to an HP removal tool. I suggest you hunt for that post or hunt for the removal tool. One other thing, are you sure this scanner is meant to work in Win2000. The NT kernal handles things differently than win9x.

No Symantec. I had been running Mcafee on my Asus motherboard when the scanner had been working previously before it started getting a lamp error. It scanned to file with a pinkish purple background though even on white pages. Did this on a PI 200 MMX NEC and Also my Asus/AMD XP3000 build and I had a bear of a time adjusting even simple scans using the color adjustment in the LTX software. Was like that from day one. Probably a bad scanner but I didn't know any different back then and figured it required color adjustment every time. If I'd known it was supposed to be automatic I wouldve taken it right back to the store or sent it in for warranty.
As I said... I just hooked the scanner up to this new ECS motherboard to look for the lamp error again to see if it gave an error number so maybe I could research and try to fix the scanner but then wound up with the floppy run and LTX Scan program problem. Now that the Copy to printer function works....I know the scanner does function again for some reason but apparently the new problem is a software error...unless the SCAN to file/ floppy run problem is IRQ related and again... no indication of conflict in device mgr. and COPY to printer function works. The LTX scan software should open regardless of any hardware conflicts anyway (if there were any). The NEC PC was using W98SE and the Asus build was running W2kpro, which is the same O/S I'm using now with this ECS MB. The software CD and HP website both have the same driver Version1.1 which is good for w9X thru XP. Tried both the CD and the website download for the heck of it with the same results. I'm currently running AVG 6.0 virus protection which uses far less resources than Mcafee or Symantec. During the last driver install (in safe mode) there was no virus protection or any other background progs running and minimal drivers so should have been a clean driver/LTX software install.
Very odd problem since the COPY (scan to printer) function works but the SCAN to file function won't even open the software and causes the floppy to run.
I don't see multiple install attempts as being a problem either...bcus the floppy run problem ocurred from the first attempt on this fresh hard drive-fresh O/S install and the problem has only improved (the COPY to Printer function working now) with a re-install in safe mode.
I'll try to search for the Thread you mentioned to see if it sheds any light on the subject. If you have any other brainstorms let me know...and thanks for all your help.

Resent a newer driver. Says its for WinXP but it should work in Win2000. Is the Email address you listed here good?

Yep. E-mail in my profile is correct and I add it to all responses as well as required to reply. Never got your mail though unless your the one trying to sell me on lower mortgage rates and I deleted you from my spam folder...LOL!
I just downloaded the driver for XP v. 1.11
so you wouldn't have to re-send it. Let you know how it works out.Dave

I even put my username in the subject box. The name of the file I was trying to send is: updaterInstall_112.exe I would say you need to check your profile here and verify the Email address. If you want I can try again but I tried twice and both times the indication was the mail went through. Do you have filter set to go to trash? Maybe you are filtering it. It is an exe file. Maybe if you Googled the exact file name you may get a hit.

Very odd. AOL has an auto spam blocker but warns me when theres mail in the box. It usually only catches 1 or 2 but lets the rest through. Not much of a blocker. It lets me look at the spam mail b4 deleting. Only mortgage offers lately.
Not sure exactly what update file you were trying to send bcus the one I just got had a different filename. I just got SJ657en v1.11 for win XP. The 2000 version was SJ655en v1.
If yours is 112 it must be version 1.12 but that would make it super new and I can't imagine a problem existing for this long waiting for v1.12 with a scanner thats a few years old already. And it did work with the NEC PC on W98 and the Asus MB on W2000 so something is real odd here. Wonder if it has to do with the ECS MB support drivers or software environment? I spoke to Asus RMA dept yesterday and my board is being repaired and should be back in a week give or take with the holiday...so I might have to wait until then to mess with it. Give both our headaches a rest on this one....haha.
I just tried the XP v. 1.11 and got the same results. Floppy runs on SCAN button but no program activation. COPY to printer button works, scans and activates the printer. I did notice an option in this version 1.11 that my v.1 doesnt have. It asks if you want to load USB or Parallel drivers. I chose USB of course. I'd try parallel for the sake of it but I doubt it would make a difference since this seems to be software and not hardware related.
I'll look into v.112 and see if there is anything of consequence but will probably have to wait for my Asus board to get back and see if it makes a difference.
Thanks for all the help. I'll keep you appraised if anything new develops.
And have a happy Thanksgiving.
Dave
