Reply: (edit)When you are first installing the OS you are asked is you need to load any SCSI, RAID or 3rd party drivers. It instructs you to hit an F key, F6 I think. The driver you need is this one: SiS RAID Driver V1.05 For Windows 98SE/ME/2K/NT/XP Find it here: http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=P4S800D-E%20Deluxe

Reply: (edit)That file originally came on the CD included with the MBoard, along with all the other drivers. If you have that disk, look for it on there.

Reply: (edit)We probably cross posted. As I said, the Sata drivers are on the MB installation CD. Try to remedy the situation by reformatting the drive. I think Win2000 has already written some temp files to the drive and just keeps picking up where it left off. How far did the installation go before asking for the disk? Did you see the screen I decribed on the first install attempt? One other point that might be relevant. If you have two SATA controllers a single drive probably should be connected to the first controller.

Reply: (edit)hmm... ok, i'm making a new disk now off the MB installation CD. will try that next. not sure if windows has placed anything on the drive. basically, when i select the "install windows" option, after it searches for devices, it says it cannot continue since there is no HD. this MoBo has 4 controllers, and i attached the SATA cable to the first. now, i was told i didn't need to interact with the RAID port on my MoBo since i only have one drive, so i do not have an IDE cable running from the RAID port to the HD. is this ok? thanks again for all your help in this matter. =)

Reply: (edit)I can't answer the question concerning the RAID. I would suggest a review of the manual. I have heard complaints about Asus skimpy manuals. Right now it seems to me that each MB is setup a little differently when it comes to SATA drives. You didn't say if you saw the screen prompting you for the drivers for SCSI, RAID or 3rd party drivers. This should happen prior to the disk giving you that message about no HD. It is very early in the boot sequence. One other thing to look for. There may be an option to enable/disable SATA controllers in the BIOS. Also, you may need to select the SATA drive in the boot order.

Reply: (edit)yeah, no real manual to speak of. ;) i've tried the F6 SCSI, Raid, etc. driver prompt, but to no avail. it just keeps asking me for the manufacturer's disk over and over. as for the BIOS, i've enabled all SATA oriented things, and the HD is first in the boot order. =/ so, you can see why i'm frustrated. =) now, my last ditch option is to try and go back to normal ATA, install the OS, and *then* switch to SATA, once all appropriate drivers are installed. this sound like a feasible plan to you?

Reply: (edit)Not is you want to run the OS off the SATA drive. Why aren't you providing the Manufacturers disk when prompted. Can't you just eject the Windows CD and pop in the MB disk? I think that would work. Are you saying that you hit F6 and then you are asked for the manufacturers disk?

Reply: (edit)ok, that plan's a bust. =) it wants it specifically from Drive A:, the floppy drive. i attempted to feed it the MoBo CD, but to no avail. yeah, hit F6, it does some searching, asks if i have other drive disks. i hit S, it prompts for manufacturer disk to drive A:, then repeats that request, despite me providing any disk.

Reply: (edit)http://www.tek-tips.com/faqs.cfm?spid=779&sfid=4641&newpid=779 might be useful. For the asus A7N8X deluxe mob (this is an nforce board), the SATA drivers are here \Drivers\SATA on the CD accompanying drive. I don't think any of the Asus website drivers for that mobo are for SATA. http://www.asus.com.tw/support/faq/qanda.aspx?KB_ID=87259&SLanguage=en-us might be helpful. files are:- Si3112r.inf Si3112r.mpd Si3112r.sys SIISUPP.VXD TxtSetup.oem total size c. 200 KB - so no problem on a floppy

Reply: (edit)No browse option? If you get to the CD you will probably need to burrow down to the proper file using the browse function. What is hit S?

Reply: (edit)steve: tried the ich5 drivers, but to no avail. thanks anyways. the asus mobo CD has no sata directory, only RAID. OtheHill: no browse option. after i hit F6, indicating that i have more drivers to supply setup, it does some more searching of my setup. then, i'm given two options. i'm told to hit the S key if i want to *S*upply more drivers, or enter to not supply more drivers. i hit S, to supply more drivers, which i've placed on the floppy. it now says to insert the Manufacturer's disk to drive a:. i insert the floppy with the drivers, hit enter. it works for a bit, then comes back with the same manufacturer's disk request. basically, nothing happens.

Reply: (edit)That could well be the problem. No drivers for USB are loaded yet. Support for USB keyboard is an option in most BIOS but I don't know about USB external drives.
