Can anyone offer some advice on utilities that can be used to run a quary against active directory

You might try starting a new post and get a little more specific. Active Directory can support a LOT of queries. It's got LDAP, which is a basic interface so lots of programs can query against it (e-mail clients, database programs, search programs, windows apps, etc...)...
