Comment: Many applications (e.g.PCAnywhere) give the option to run them as a service. What is the benefit of doing this ? Who is the owner of files created by an application running as a service and how is access controlled ? Is it by setting permisions for the folder they are put in ? My question is a general one, but for info, the application that I am currently interested in is NCH Swift Telephone answering machine software (not currently running as a service). I have a problem where mesages taken and saved as wav files cannot be replayed when a different user logs on to the PC

Reply: (edit)A Service runs is a program that runs in the background and can be loaded with booting the PC. Right click on My Computer and select Manage to see Services running.
