I get a rundll32.exe error (rundll32.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows) when I go into Display Properties and try to choose a different background image.

I tried replacing the rundll32.exe file with the one on my install CD and then rebooting and get the same problem. I also tried removing all extra pictures in My Pictures folder to see if they were causing a problem and I still got the error message. I then tried to reboot and load Last Known Good Configuration and that didn't help either. Next I tried in safe mode and was able to click on other images with no errors, but I don't know what to try from there.

Any suggestions please let me know!

Rundll32.exe is an executable that runs .dll files as programs. Therefore it is not rundll32.exe that is the problem, it is a .dll file. This may help:
Go to this web site; http://www.p-nand-q.com/download/rundll32.html , download the version of rundll32.exe that they have modified and follow the instructions to replace yours.
Then reproduce the error.
Finally check the Application Log through the Event Viewer, which can be found in the Administrative Tools, for any entries made by rundll32. This should help to identify the dll that is causing the problem. Try replacing the dll to see if it solves the problem, get a new copy from the Internet or the Win2k disk.

Hopefully this will work for you. It is the only thing I can think of.

Thanks for the response. I visted that site and followed what it said to do. I then went back into Display Properties and got the error message again checked event viewer but nothing was there showing any errors at all. Before the getting the error I cleared out the event viewer logs so this one would be easy to spot and it was empty.

Thanks again for the response.

By the way I updated w2k to SP4 and all other updates that it showed to do on microsofts website. I even tried to do a restore from the win2k CD and neither worked.

Any other suggestions?

Small update. I come to realize that I only get the error when I click on a .jpg background image. If I click on a .bmp image it shows it, but as soon as I click on a .jpg it gives me a error and it doesn't show any events in Event Viewer.

I am having the exact same problem! I only noticed i hv this problem when i see my wallpaper is no longer there. Like Lazy98, i dont get any error if i use a bmp instead of a jpg wallpaper. I tried the above link, scanned and didnt find the worm. Tried the modified rundll32.exe as adviced above, didnt work as well. So Lazy98, have u fixed yours? I really hope u fixed it and u'll see this again.

I've got exactly same error. Re-installing rundll32.exe did not help. Perhaps because I also installed SP4 for Win2000?
BTW I did throw away some (empty) directories, and I think Display Properties is searching for them...
Does anyone know which directories should be there? Errors are btw only generated by jpg or gif files, not by bmp.

Error in eventlog:
The application, rundll32.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 11/09/2003 @ 13:01:18.810 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 7C4FBB92 (GetCurrentDirectoryW)

more specifically:
I cannot run the following command:

rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,0 (FOR BACKGROUND PROPERTIES)

without a rundll32 error

any ideas?

(other commands in desk.cpl can be opened)
