why would you want to, instead of using an IM program?

You said you don't want to use windows messenger. Are you sure you mean "windows messenger" and not "MSN Messenger?" Because they are two different things. Windows messenger is about as simple as you can get: type the target computer's name or address, type your message and hit return. The message pops up on the target computer's screen.

If not that, then please describe your requirements in more detail. Saying you want a messenging program that works "like the ping tool" isn't very helpful.

I'm assuming that you are using Window XP for these 2 machines.

Go to Start, Run, then type "cmd"
Under C Prompt, type net send <computer name> <your message>

Example:

C:\net send comp testing
