On April 14, 2002 Vance helped a guy who was having problem unjoining his w2k machine from domain. He asked him to delete the HKLM\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\$MACHINE.ACC registry key and it worked for him.

I am having the exact same problem but in my registry I don't have this key. I only have uptil HKLM\Security and I can't seem to delete this key. I tried deleting it thru regedit and regedt32 both ways.

Do you have any ideas or suggestions?

Your help would be highly appreciated.

The complete problem and resolution provided are pasted below:

When trying to change my Win 2K Pro machine from a domain to a workgroup, I get an error "The following error occurred attempting to unjoin the domain... The revision level is unknown."
The old domain doesn't exist any longer. I'm logged onto the computer as local admin. Is there anyway around this error msg?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Thanks.
I'm not a NT/Win2K administrator, but I guess the domain admin is an account that has some sort of rights to the whole domain. If so, I don't have this uid/password. The only access I have is local admin.

Is there a way around this problem without the domain admin account.

Thanks again.

Here's my answer.
Delete the HKLM\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\$MACHINE.ACC registry key. Use Regedt32, change the permissions to be able to view it.

Now unjoin the domain and rejoin it.

Good Luck

Vance
