An application I installed changed the association for Windows screensaver files (.scr files). So now I can no longer start my screensaver by using a hotkey to invoke a shortcut I created to a specific Windows screensaver file (ssstars.scr). Can you tell me how to re-establish the original Windows file association to .scr files so my shortcut will work again? Thanks for any assistance you can provide. -- Stu Borman

I assume you mean that I should enter that command in a Command Prompt window. I did that, and it didn't work. I had already mucked around in the Registry and had exported the HKey Classes Root .scr and scrfile entries and then changed them to the way they are on my associate's computer, on which .scr files are still associated normally. But that didn't work either, which is why I posted this help request. Thanks. -- Stu Borman

Hi,
I suppose you tried Tools>FolderOptions>FileTypes.
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

Yes, I tried it. It turns out that .scr is not a registered file type that is listed under Folder Options, so I can't reassign it in the usual way. Apparently, standard Windows file types like .exe and .scr are not included in the Folder Options applet, perhaps because they could then be manipulated too easily.

Hi Stu,
This page has XP fixes:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
No idea if they work for w2k, but I would be 100% backed up [imaged] before trying it.

I'm curious as to what software you installed that caused this problem?

To Mechanix2Go -- The www.dougknox.com page looks very promising. I'll try that fix tomorrow (Monday) when I get to the office. (The problem is on my office computer.) I'll look into the .reg file that's provided there and export the relevant Registry keys before installing the file, in case the www.dougknox.com Windows XP fix doesn't correspond to the changes needed on my Windows 2000 system. Thanks for your assistance.
To Jennifer SUMN -- I installed a legitimate, normally benign program. It's a free viewer program that makes it possible to view ChemDraw structures (chemical structure drawings) without purchasing the entire ChemDraw application, which is expensive. It just so happens that the program unwisely expropriates the .scr extension and associates it with another (non-ChemDraw) type of chemical structure drawing. I uninstalled the ChemDraw reader when I found out what it had done (because I don't actually need it that much), but the uninstall routine unfortunately did not reset the original association of the .scr extension with Windows screensaver files. If Windows XP were the operating system on my office computer, I don't think I would have had so much of a problem as I am reassociating the .scr extension with screensaver files, but that happens to be difficult with the Windows 2000 operating system that's currently running on my office computer.

Dear Mechanix2Go -- The dougknox.com Registry file for fixing .scr file association problems worked. I now have my hotkeyed screensaver functionality back. I really appreciate your assistance with this problem. The only thing that remains for me is to figure out how to reassociate the correct icon with .scr files, but that's a minor matter. I'll look at my computer at home to try to figure out where the correct icon is located. Thanks for your invaluable assistance.

I was able to restore my screensaver icons as well. I added a DefaultIcon subkey to the HCR scrfile key and gave it the value %1. This apparently permits each screensaver file to use the icon contained in that file. That's why each of the screensaver icons looks a little different than the others. Each icon attempts to mimic the look of that screensaver. Thanks again for your assistance.

Hi Stu,
That's a gem I'll file away.
Thanks.

Stu, thank you for starting this post. I too had the EXACT same problem with my system's .scr file type associations being altered when I installed the CHIME plugin for my web browser. I applied the registry edit and it restored my .scr file type associations back to default. I believe if I reinstall CHIME, I will have to also reapply the registry edit to get my scr file type associations back to default. I haven't checked with MDL Information Systems, authors of the CHIME plugins for molecular/chemical structure model viewing. I assume they are aware of the problem, but maybe not. The problem does not effect the screensavers themselves, only shortcut links to them.
