Comment:

If I do a repair install of Windows 2K is there a 100% or close to it guarantee that my documents will remain intact?

Also are there many benefits (or any at all) of doing a repair installation or should I just backup and reinstall Windows?

P.S. I am considering a repair/reinstall because there is a lot of spyware on the computer some of which I have tried to remove multiple times, Spybot and AdAware keep freezing whilst trying to remove all of it.

A repair installation is basically an over the top install. As such it most likely won't rid you of any malware.

You shouldn't have that much trouble removing spyware, if that is what you are infected with.

Doesn't Spybot offer to run at the next boot?

Boot into Safe mode and run the cleaners from there. You do have all your cleaners updated don't you?

Download CCleaner slim and run it. Link below.

Thanks have already ran both cleaners in safe mode b4 posting question. And already tried running spybot on next boot still failed to remove all the spyware/malware. AdAware won't run at all in safe mode it gives me a memory address error for some reason. Cleaners have current definition files. I'll try ccleaner didn't think of that.

There is another good one called malwarebytes.

edit

Also run the registry cleaner module in CCleaner. Save a backup file just in case but I have found it to be perfectly safe.

k forgot about malwarebytes too usually just use a combo of Adaware and Spybot and those work 99% of the time. I'll try malwarebytes. It's a friends PC I'm working on right now. >_< Wish me luck. If that doesn't work I'll follow up.

As the system apparently still boots - albeit with pests around... perhaps (for safety) first copy to optical media (and/or another HD) all data... Verify the copies are valid (accessible on the parent system - and if possible one other). Then set about whatever?
