Comment: hi there, i have recently moved into a shared student household, with access to one computer. Both myself and my flatmates became aware of the amount of porngarphic pop ups that appeared everytime you look on the internet. we scanned the pc using one of those free internet sites, and found there some 500 porno material including cookies. Can anyone recommend a cheap, safe, and reliabe system (from the shops, - as we cannot afford to spend hours downloading from the internet on our tariff, we live in the UK)that could trash this material. we have deleted what we can from the history and files and folders, but this does not go when scanned. All we want to do is install a cd that destroys this junk, then uninstall straight away. Thank you so much for helping, it will such a relief to be read of this problem!

Reply: (edit)While waiting for someone to give you an idea, I would suggest that you download some anti-spyware materials. Once downloaded and installed, you will only need to update them now and then. The software is free. Alternatively hunt around your friends who have already downloaded the zipped versions of the software, copy them onto a CD and then install them on your computer. The following software is essential for keeping your computer free of spyware. Download CWShredder from http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe, Spybot from http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download and Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/. Run them while offline and in SAFE boot mode. Delete the red entries that Spybot displays. Reboot. Download SpywareBlaster from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html, install it to prevent further problems. Hope this helps.

Reply: (edit)Go to http:www.panicware.com , and navigate to their downloads page. About half-way down their list of programs, you will find PopUp Stopper Free Edition. Download and install it and it will stop the PopUps. If you follow Tonto's suggestions, then you should be able to get rid of all the unwanted cookies, reg entries , and any spyware on your computer.
