Removing Old Devices off Computer

Not that it is a real problem, but I would really like to know how. When I move a nic card from one slot to another it installs as (nic name) #2. If I move it back to original slot it recovers the one without the #2. And it saves all the settings from the original one also. I would like to remove the original one, so that I can install the card in the second slot without it being labeled as number 2. Any help would be appreciated.
Raccoon, remove nic from computer, start pc, go into Control Panel, Add/Remove Hardware, remove any nic devices, if any. shutdown, reinstall nic, start pc.
you also may want to go into safe mode and remove anything from "add/remove programs" and under device manager that has to do with your NIC. Sometimes the device will show up in safe mode, but not in regular mode.
