I've been working on the problem off and on for weeks, trying to find a solution. It involves viewing Java Applets with IE 5.5. All was fine when I had Windows 2000 Pro with SP1 installed and IE 5.01. However, I went to upgrade my IE to 5.5 and then all I lost the ability to view web pages with Java applets. I would like to now remove IE 5.5 and put IE 5.01 back on. Is that possible ? Does anyone know?
I had put this problem on the board earlier, and the reply I received was:
"It sounds as though you may have installed Win SP2 after you installed IE 5.5.
The installation instructions for SP2 clearly state to remove IE5.5 then install SP2, then reinstall IE5.5"I appreciate the answer. However, there is NO way to remove IE 5.5 from my machine, that I am aware of, prior to installing SP2 for Windows 2000. I have tried using the control panel, and add remove programs, but IE 5.5 doesn't show up. It does show up if you have IE 5.5 SP2 installed, but doesn't give you way of truly removing the entire browser from the system. So how DO you remove IE 5.5 ? If there is a way, how is it done?
IEradicator only works with 95, 98 and ME. Also, I cannot reinstall the VM, as it is contained SP2 for W2K. I also found on another board something about renaming msjava.dll to msjava.bak and then just reinstalling the VM component on the upgrade. However, if you are using W2K OS, you don't have a choice of just selecting the Virtual Machine component, due to the WFP (?).
Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I would much appreciate any fast response. My inability to view java applets in IE is fast becoming a major problem.
Thanks in advance.
Glenn

James - I looked up the article and its for removing Outlook Express from Windows 2000, and then did a search for removing IE 5.5 and came up with nada.
Bob - how do I delete the IE 5.5 SHORT of just deleting the program files from the hard drive?
Thanks you guys

Here is page with instructions how to uninstall IE 5.5
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q257/2/34.ASP
whoever said you have to uninstall IE in order to install SP2 is crazy. If this was the case you would have been given a msg with instructions.

Mary, thank you for responding.....
However, I went to that page, and found some more Microsoft worms......
---------------------
On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools in the list of installed programs, and then click Add/Remove.
NOTE: If "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools" is missing from the list of installed programs, run Setup.exe from your Internet Explorer\Setup folder. If you are running Windows 2000, run the w2kexcp.exe /u command from your "Internet Explorer\IE Uninstall" folder.
----------------------
A few notes on the previous:
1. I am the sole user of this computer, and I indeed have Administrator priviledges
2. I have hidden and system files available to be viewed and or browsed in my folder options.
3. Where it states: 'If you are running Windows 2000, run the w2kexcp.exe /u command from your "Internet Explorer\IE Uninstall" folder', I do not have a folder, nor do I have the .exe file "W2KEXCP.EXE" ANYWHERE ON MY machine.
Very frustrating... All I want to do is view Java applets in IE and I cannot. Wondering if anyone else had this problem, and if so, what was the workaround ???????

I am a little crazy MaryB and a little dyslexic too. However I read the instruction that Microsoft wrote and then I posted a suggestion to uninstall IE5.5 before upgrading to Win2K SP1 or Sp2
Here is a small section of those instructions.

Well if the code of this site wasn't so screwed up that message would be clearer. However you get the idea.
The exact wording can be looked up on your own computers in the Internet Explorer folder. Look in the "read me" file. It spells it out clearly to even those of you not crazy.

Well, I for one am not accusing anyone of being crazy. I'm just trying to find a solution to a problem, that I just don't think exists. How do you remove IE 5.5 ? And if you do remove IE 5.5, then does that not mean that you don't have a browser needed to interact with the web to get the needed files necessary to perform the upgrade.
FJ - thanks for responding.....
I have searched for a read me file as per your instructions (The exact wording can be looked up on your own computers in the Internet Explorer folder. Look in the "read me" file. It spells it out clearly to even those of you not crazy). I do not have a readme file in there.
Here is what I would like to do. I would either like to
a) view java applets with IE 5.5, or
b) remove ie 5.5 from windows 2000 and go back to 5.01, where I last saw an applet with the IE browser.
Any comments welcome.

Oh I'm not a sensitive person, and nothing anyone can say about me truly upsets me (for long anyway). I never intended my response to sound person.
I just sent the "read me" to you, but it specifically for IE 5.5 SP1, and from the way I read your needs now, I think you want to remove IE completely.

i think the microsoft article 257234 that maryb gave you is the one you want to uninstall ie5.5.
i found the program w2kexcp.exe by using search in program files/internet explorer/ieuninstall if this is any help

FJ - the recent instructions you posted are reasonable, but not what you gave Glen, which he put in " " If you read carefully, your quote from MS you will see "upgrading from 98x" to WIN2K. With a fresh install of WIN2K you don't have to uninstall anything. Have to be careful what we read/post hmmm ;-)
Myself, I never install anything with the service packs included.I do the app install, then go get all the service packs separately.
Glen: I hope you get straightened out soon. Can be easy with a bunch of different instructions.

Thanks to everyone ! I'm still down with it.
Here's what I've found, and what I haven't found:
John - I received your e-mail late last night, and want to thank you for it. I appreciate your input, insight, and determination in helping to get my problem straightened out.
Mary - Thanks for that article. I was in the same frame mind of you, that on that type of install, you would think in big bold letters that they would tell you to uninstall prior to installing. Or something to that effect.
Still doesn't make sense to me, even after 18 years of doing this stuff.James - I wish I had your program files on my computer. I looked for that file. I don't even have a file folder called uninstall information, let alone the program called w2kexcp.exe. I am going to check a few of the machines here on my home network, and see if they have it. I have four machines here, and two of them have the W2K W/SP1 INSTALLED on them.
Meanwhile, if anyone else reads this, HELP!
I would rather not use an old version of NS to view applets, when I know I should be able to do so with IE. Microsoft maybe forcing me to fold, throw my cards in on their product, which is sad, because I think that MS has a better browser. In my searching, I have found horror stories about IE 6, the same problems are occuring on various newsgroups (NO JAVA - applets don't show up).
Thanks again everyone, but I'm still scratching my noggin on this one. Anyone else have any ideas, shoot them my way!
Glenn

Glen it`s happened to me i just reformatted the drive and reloaded all the backed up files DONT USE IE 5.5

I found a little program from 98Lite that removes Internet Explorer from the Windows matrix.
It says it will remove it completely.
Here is the "IEradicator" folks.

Ok, if you want to view Java applets and that's the only reason you want to drop IE 5.5, why not first make sure the Java applets are enabled in the Tools/Options area, and then maybe try downloading the viewer from Sun?
Of course I could have missed the whole point after reading all those replies :) ......Might start a new post too....

In replying to the latest, I surely did check to make sure that IE 5.5 had java applets enabled in the tools/option area. That was the very first thing I did check.
Thanks.

Hi
I have had the same problem as you, I upgraded to 5.5 and then SP2 and my java started to fail and I got red crosses instead of pictures everywhere. I ead this thread and run IEradicator as mentioned above, sure enough IE disappeared. I then reinstalled w2k from my w2k CDROM and I had my lovely 5.0 back again, 5.0 I love you!
Moral of the tale, do not listen to online banking technical help lines, they have a list of stuff to reel out, ignore it all!
