Remove items from Start menu

It is easy enough to remove items from the Startup menu. But what about the context menu you get when rightclicking the Start button. I want to remove items I never use such as: Cute FTP upload, Scan with Norton Antivirus, etc which were added when installing those programs. Does anyone know how to do this?

My understanding is that you can remove these by going into the Win directory with Explorer and directly editing the start menu there, deleting the items you dont want and also grouping (for example) all Utilities under a heading of Utilities. Works with all versions of Windows and you do this just as if they were directories.
