Everytime I use the Disk Cleanup tool for my harddrive it takes forever to scan, because it looks for old files to compress. Xp and 2000 both do this, so I was wondering if there was a way to disable it?

disable what, you are running it manually and searching the drive for these files is what dik cleanup does. Wouldnt not running it be the same as disabling it? Just delete the files manually, it takes 2 min in docs-n- settings. If I misunderstood what you were asking, I appologize.

This is a known bug with Win2k and WinXP. Disk Cleanup is freezing because it is searching for old files that should be compressed. To remedy this run regedit, click on My Computer. Open up Edit and click on Find. Type in "Compress Old" (less the quotation marks) and click Find Next. Regedit will find the Compress Old Files key. Press Delete and when it asks if you are sure click OK. Reboot and Disk Cleanup will run like a breeze.
