Trying to connect to a Win 2K Pro machine from a Win XP Pro machine via Remote Desktop Connection. RDC is installed on the Win 2K machine.
Whenever I try to connect to the Win 2K Pro machine via RDC, I get this message:
"The client could not connect to the remote computer.
"Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept remote connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection."
I am able to RDC to other PCs---just not this one.
I'm not familiar with how to make sure the Win 2K machine is fully enabled to receive connections.
All help appreciated.

Windows 2000 does not not have the remote desktop (server). Only XP Professional and above, do....
The client runs on antyhing, though.

RDC has been installed on the Win 2K machine, and yes, I can ping the PC successfully. I just can't RDC to it....

"RDC has been installed on the Win 2K machine"
Could you please explain how you installed it? As CyberSlug said, RDC does not run on Win2K only the client part does, unless you are using a third party application. Just because you can ping it doesn't mean to can remote to it.

I thought you were talking about 2K server, not pro, sorry. I am insterested in what you installed on it as well?

I installed the client portion of RDC (msrdpcli.exe)on the Win 2K machine? Are the settings on the Win 2K machine that have to be changed so I can use RDC to connect to it?

That may only work server side, I havent tried that on 2K Pro? Are you sure that will work? Let me know when you get it to work as I'd like to hear how it does.

Ok, I'm not sure how many times this needs to be repeated since you aren't getting what we are saying so here goes
RDC SERVER DOES NOT WORK ON WIN2K
RDC SERVER DOES NOT WORK ON WIN2K
RDC SERVER DOES NOT WORK ON WIN2K
RDC SERVER DOES NOT WORK ON WIN2K
RDC SERVER DOES NOT WORK ON WIN2KTry Real VNC
It will work on Win2K

Kurt-I didnt think so either but, I saw a couple of articles saying it could. I always thought it had to be either server or xp and even after reading the articles, I dont know that I believe it will which is why I asked that he posted back if it worked.

Well if you can get it to work, I stand corrected. But you would have to do some serous tweaking/hacking of Win2K to get it to work. A stock load of Win2K will not run the server side. Real VNC is so easy to use though, it would be much easier going this route.

I'm interested in knowing where these articles are so that I can read them for myself.
Soylent Green is PEOPLE!!!

OK...I am able use RDC to connect from the Win 2K PC to other PCs quite successfully. It's when I attempt to use RDC on another PC to attempt to connect to the Win 2K PC--that I get connection errors.
This is my issue. I just wonder what is preventing a RDC connection on the Win 2K PC.

Does that mean that Windows 2000 is very hard to be connected via remote client PCs?
This is what I really want to know as well. If you do manage to get it to work, please let me know.
I am using Win 2000Pro to access the folders and files on the server (Win2000 Advanced Server), but not too sure how to set a remote desktop connection from 2K pro to 2K server. Any help would be much appreciated.

Simon, UK.

Remote Desktop Connection consist of 2 peices.. the host service (Terminal services for Win2000 Server Edition and remote Assistance for all versions of WinXP) which all wait for someone to connect to them. The other is the remote desktop connection software which is the software you use to connect to a host box. Unfortunatelly there is no Host Service that exist for Win 2000 Pro. so you can't use Remote Desktop connection to connect to a Win 2000 Pro. This is a Dead End for you. try other alternative like Real VNC.

I downloaded RealVNC Version 4.1.2 and installed just the client part on Windows 2000 Professional Machine and the server part installed on XP Professional Machine. Using the Windows 2000 Professional PC, I tried to connect to the host (the XP PC) and error said timeout. Then I tried to the host from XP pc to add a client. I added the client (Windows 2000 Pro) and error said 'Can't Make Connection'. Why is this so? Remember, I am using this RealVNC.
