Releasing processes

Hi all! I'm sorry I can't tell you my processor, it's on my laptop and not here.
However, I am having trouble with W2K not releasing processes. When I close a program appropriately (File, Close) or via the "x" in the corner, it never really closes. I still find it in the Task Manager, sometimes hanging up other things. Particularly shut down, as a matter of fact.
I haven't found any info on this, but wondered if anyone else had experienced this and how you handled it.

Here is a free program called Process Explorer and can tell which process is causing the problem http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

There are a number of programs, especially financal apps, that do not close down with clicking the X. All they do is close the window but they remain.
Might want to state what programs are the issue.

Um, I would not run Process Explorer, it's a very complex tool and not quickly intuitive to the average user.
Use task manager to see what process is hanging it up, what is the laptop doing at the time? What background tasks/services are configured on the top?
Wanderers suggestion is key to a solution.
