Comment:

I had a browsing problems with IE6 and thought there was files corrupted in
IE 6. The repair feature told me that he couldn't repair it that I had to reinstall Internet Explorer.

I uninstalled Internet Explorer 6 from my Windows 2000 using the the Add/Remove Programs.

Currently, I do not have listed any Internet Explorer in the list of Add/Remove Programs. Therefore, I believe IE6 is gone. In the Internet Explorer of the Program Files there is no exe (except IE6setup.exe) and therefore it seems that IE 6 has been correctly removed.

Currently, I have the basic Internet Explorer 5.00.3700.1000 in my machine and I would like to update to IE 6 again but cannot. However, When I run the IE6setup.exe, Windows update doesn't let me reinstall it. The messages are:

a. one error msg window says that I should remove IE from other language before installing a new version - I thought I already removed IE6!!! (see above)
b. another error msg window says the certificate is not valid

My conclusion are that the trust-checking mechanism doesn't recognize the certificate and there may other problems too (see some lines of the setupapi.log file at the end of this memo).

I already did the following actions but without success (same error messages):

1. Rerun Windows Update Setup more than 3x - unfortunately the trust-checking mechanism is not automatically disabled. Should I try to fix the existing trust-checking mechanism by installing the Authenticode 2 update? - how do I do that? Couldn't find it in the Microsoft Knowledge DB.

2. Try to Bypass the trust checking by enaming the Wintrust.dll before running IE6Setup.exe again.

I just dowloaded the Internet_Explorer_6_-_Full_Install_for_Windows_98__ME__NT__2000__XP_.zip from the net (47MB!) with a IE6setup.exe but I wonder if just running it would solve my problem.

If anybody has an idea what to do from here, I would appreciate a lot b'cause I ma damn lost and I don't have the Windows 2000 CD :(

Thank you,

Ataulfo

I was going to suggest running a repair reinstall first - but you need 2k install CD for that. Without it, I suspect you are going to struggle to reinstall ie6 - as its sounds like you have some corruptions in your o/s - probably the registry. Do you not have any friends with 2k you could borrow CD from?

You could install firefox and use that instead (better than ie IMO - though it doesn't work with the odd site, so you'd need your ie5 for those occasions).

Go here and download ieradicator.
http://www.litepc.com/ier_lic.html
It will remove the ie completely. Once deleted then you can reload what ever version you want/have.
