Comment:

If I merge .reg file in Windows 2000
does files with REGEDIT4 and Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 both work or does one of them produce a warning or something? If REGEDIT4 works then it should work on every windows version to my knowledge. And does someone know if files with Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 works at all in 9x/me/nt.

some files created in ver 5 will work in 9x/me/nt, But others won't.
If you mean that you are creating the file using the export/save option in regedit, then use that saved reg file only in the OS in which it was created.
