I restarted my computer and after the Win2000 splash screen I get c0000218 Registry File Failure: Registry can't load hive (file) \%systemroot%\system32\config\SOFTWARE or log or alternate.
I can't boot into safemode or last known good configuration. I tried fixing it with repairing the Win2000 installation with the emergency boot disc and it didn't work.
Help please!

I had exactly the same problem which I assumed was the result of an upgrade from Win98 plus a few registry hacks I employed to rid the 98 internals and drivers. I finally had move the Windows directory to another drive and do a fresh reinstall of the OS. After I restored all my drivers and programs, everything works fine. It is a pain in the ass - but recoverable.

I had the same problem with the same error
message with w2000pro loaded and operating for 6 months. One day my daughters power user screen froze and when I rebooted I got the blue screen with 218 error. I had to reload the os, applications and the whole gamut from scratch. The problem hasn't returned. It's a mistery

I too had the same problem.I think I have a fix for this. Its working for me. Its a quite an easy one.
1. Make sure U take the ERD after every install of new component2. Don't ever shutdown the system !!! , instead select restart and when the system restarts power off the system.
I guess the main reason for this is because of the 2mb of HD cache and the speed of your HD(7200 RPM).
This link should be helpful even if the system crashes

I am just going through this problem.
My blue screen at start-up said...STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writeable.
The problem I am having is my ERD was destroyed by my kid.
I have valuable info that I need back.Everything I have found on this subject involves an Emergency Repair Disk.
What do I do?

It sux. I had this occur to me twice during one week. Both times computer was shut down properly. The first time I simply moved computer to a different place, second time was after I installed PGP.

Got exaclty the same problem, although it doesnth appen on 2K without any additional drivers installed. I shutdown and power up again a few times and itr dies on me, any ideas?

Try the following solution from Microsoft, it seems to have worked for me:

We were working on the problem in the tech department and it seems the problem comes when you shutdown your computer. The HD cache is too large and the shutdown is too fast. All memory in the cache is deleted and not able to save to HD. Then the registry is only partly saved. So just restart your computer. I'll try to find a patch or find a way to slow down the shutdown. If not I'll just have to throw something together myself.
