i'm about to install xp onto my laptop, and want to re-format the hdd for a clean install -- what's the best way to do that?

Boot with the XP CD. Follow the prompts. You'll be given the choice of formatting any partitions found, to the file system of your choice. NTFS is preferred.

And of course, Microshafted, as usual, has made an installer, that

"while technically correct, isn't really very helpful."


I would also take the time to argue with the installer routine long enough to create one partition for the op system, and one for data. The data partition can be formatted in either FAT or NTFS, but if you partition it in FAT, you'll be able to see it from a '98 bootdisk, in case.
