Recycle bin problem

OS: win 2000
CPU/Ram: PIV/128 MB

i have a 40 gb harddisk.and in recycle bin there are more than 12000 files.i m not able to delete them at once,it hangs up while doing so.what should i have to do.It never deletes more than 10 files at a time.
