Recovering unallocated data-dynamic

I formatted my primary partition and reinstalled win2k. When I got everything reinstalled, however, it didn't recognize my other partitions. In disk management, it says my other partitions are unallocated. I looked at some past posts and used VirtualLab and it found all my stuff but it cost an arm and a leg. Is there any, non-commercial software I can get for cheaper? I'm a college student and don't have the money to fork out $100plus.
I tried to run Recover but it said 'Cannot lock the drive.' Any software out there?
