Comment:
I sometimes use this forum at work to help solve some of my customers issues with their pc's, however the only issue I have is with the way the adverts are formatted. They use Adobe Flash Player and my work place has some restrictions on what is allowed on web pages to be viewed.
(eg. we cannot get on MSN, yahoo or any online games). We can search the web for extra resorces to help us. When I do a search here all the adverts just show in page cannot be displayed. Then after 3 or 4 pages in it will not let me go back unless I close out of IE6 and start all over again.

Is any chance in the future that the format will change here in adverts not using flash?

Hello,

I would try to find another solution. Flash advertising is pretty popular.

Flash is easily disabled in IE6 - just goto tools and "Manage Add ons" and select the Macromedia/Adobe flash component, and choose the disabled option at the bottom. Press ok, and Flash items will no longer display on webpages.

I don't care for the flash advertisements, but a bigger issue that I think should be addressed is the site's scaling and positioning.

Currently, the site is left justified and scaled for 800x600 which is outdated. While there still are some people that use small monitors at that resolution, now days, the vast majority of people use 17” or larger at a minimum res of 1028x768. The systems that I and everyone that I know use, means that this site only utilizes a little over ½ of the available space. If you don't want to scale to a higher res, than can you at least center the pages so that the wasted space isn't so apparent?

Hello,

I centered the page. It should look better now.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Justin

Your post interested me. I think it requires more detail/correctness though. There is no Tools/Manage Add-ons. There is Tools/Internet Options but I couldn't find it there either. Can you explain further please?

Justin,

I'm impressed; I posted my suggestion and by the time I got into work you made the change. I have a couple other suggestions, but I'll keep those for a new thread.

Hmmm - so that's what happened. Today I noticed the lefthand column of forum links is now indented with an inch and a half of white space (under FireFox1.5 with AdBlock)

A bit disconcerting (as changes often are) but I suppose I'll get used to it ; )

Derek,

Sorry I must have assumed it was on 2000 - I'm posting from an XP machine, with IE6 SP1. Still, it may be in 2000, as I know of another way to access it - in the bottom right corner of IE where it says "Internet", and there's the 5 blocks next to it on the left - if you double click in the 3rd one in from the right, the "manage add-ons" dialog appears - albeit on here, let me know if it also works on Windows 2000.

jboy,

I'm viewing on a Viewsonic G810 (21") at 1280x1024 and have 4" of white space on each side and my brother's system has a 22" wide screen which has about 6" per side. On the widescreen 2/3 of the screen is white space. That's a lot of wasted space.

Interesting. Up until now I'd assumed IE6 was the same on all OS's. From what you are saying it seems I was wrong.

To make matters worse I'm on W98SE. Can't find anything you say on here but, as you say, maybe it's different on W2k.

Yes, I suppose it would be even more exaggerated on those kinds of displays. I'm using a 'basic' 17" CRT, 1024x768 - things do seem 'squeezed' towards the middle somewhat, although I don't know if that's the case, or merely a perception

Haven't seen many adverts here (for very long) since employing Adblock - that's ok though, I'm not about to buy anything ; )

Hi Derek,

Again I've made assumptions that you're on 2000! Lol sorry about that. I also always thought IE6 was the same across each version of Windows, but looking at it now, I imagine it came as part of XP's SP2. That's not to say you can't still disable Flash in 98/2000 - it's just not as pretty, as you have to manually delete it from \Windows\Downloaded Program Files.

Aha, that makes sense, thx for the update.

From posters point of view I suppose a means to "temporarily" disable would be ideal. I daresay there is some neat way with older OS's but it might take a bit of fathoming out.

I've no personal need because my various gizmo's hide it all from me (hosts file & pop-up stopper mainly). I also have a knack of browsing on full security, dropping it down to default when websites don't play ball. I've a handy shortcut in the links bar to the Security slider.

Found a solution to the issue. If I use the anonymous proxy from http://hideu.net/ at work for this forum it works great. There is no software to install and most adverts are blocked.
