Hello.I'm trying to connect two laptops together using a direct cable connection. One is using Win2000,the other is using Win98.I want to transfer some files from the 98 machine to the 2000 machine.I have enabled file and print sharing where needed but the problem is that the 2000 machine keeps asking for usernames and or passwords where i have specified not to use passwords for access. Can anyone help?

I've had a similar problem when trying to connect my laptop and Win2000 machine via ethernet. On the Win2000 laptop, goto Control Panel and open Users and Passwords. Click the Add button.
Now this is IMPORTANT. Under user name, you MUST enter your Win98 laptop's logon name (The name in the Start menu next to the "Log Off" option). It is case-sensitive. Under Full name, put your name (or any name). Click Next, and type in a password. Now you must select what the user can do. I have always set mine as Administrators, but Standard User should work fine (if not, you can modify it later). Now click Finish. Finally to put it into effect, click OK. Now use the user name and password you used in creating the new user as the information the Direct Cable Connection is asking for and your set!
