Hi

I am encountering a strange problem while trying to connect my notebook to my PC using a standard UTP cable..

My notebook is running windows 2000 while the PC is on ME.. After connecting the cable and configuring both the machines to have different IPs ( I set the IP of the notebook as 192.168.0.1 and the other one as 192.169.0.2), I am able to see an icon in the taskbar ( Indicating that the LAN is connected ) on the notebook.. it also indicates that it is being able to send packets to the other end however its not receiving any data packets from my PC.. Also , I am not able to ping either system through the other... The cabling is correct because the LED in the LAN cards is flickering...

Another indication that the cabling and other things are correct is that if I gave the same IP address to both the computers.. an error message appears on the 2000 machine indicating that it has the same IP as some other machine on the network .. indicating that there Indeed IS some sort of communication between the machines..

Other settings that I have done are

Gateway : 192.168.0.1
DNS : 192.168.0.1 on both machines

Please advice...

Hallo,

I think the problem is with your settings. I have the same setup here with 2000 on laptop and 98 on desktop . If you are not using ICS or the other machine is not a domain , then why you are adding dns ip address on both machines. I sugest 192.168.10.1 on laptop and 192.168.10.2 on deskotp with subnet mask on both is 255.255.255.0 . Hope it will clear your problem . You can also try with obtain ip address automatically setting..

All the best of your work for setting up the lan.. Pradeep

take out the gateway IP, if you are not going outside of the network, there is no need for a gateway IP. The current IP config will work, take out the gateway IP.

If both PC's are not connected by a switch, hub or bridge; then you need to use a crossover cable to directly connect the two PC's.
