I am having problems installing a Linksys wireless 4 port router (befw11s4). I have a cable connection that works fine with my computer. Once I connect the Linksys router to the NIC, I lose my internet connection.

I can ping my default gateway and ip address fine, but am unable to ping any outside sites. I figure this might indicate a problem with my TCP/IP configuration.

My cable connection configures my IP address dynamically, so all my settings allow for automatic detection. I am stumped as to what to do next. Here is the output from ipconfig:

C:\>ipconfig/all

I am assuming that your internet connections is now hooked up to the router and you are trying to share the connection. There is a setting on the Linksys router for mac address cloning. Get the mac address (IPCONFIG /all) of the NIC from the computer that the cable modem was originally hooked up to and put the mac address on the linksys router. Its one of the advanced settings I believe.

I went into the linksys router settings and entered the MAC address from the NIC.

Still the same problems. I can ping the IP address and default gateway but cannot pinf any outside site.

Could this be a problem with my DNS settings? Any other suggestions?

Actually, I found a solution. I went to Linksys' support page and downloaded the latest version of Fireware. Once this was installed, I m,anually set the MAC address as Richard suggested and everything worked perfectly!

Thanks a lot for all your help, Richard.

Tim,

Just to add to Ricahrd's reply, make sure the you run IPCONFIG /release then IPCONFIG /renew from the command prompt. Once you set the MAC address you have to release any IP addresses currently on your machine then renew them... In that order...
