Subject: Problem with Win2k Server - Service failed to start
|
Comment: Hello, I accidently turned of a needed Service under Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services. It's called the Remote Procudure Call (RPC). I disabled it by righ clicking it and properties then select disable and I stopped the service. It used to start automatically. I thought i didn't need this service. But now, I can't turn it back on. When I right click on and properties, nothing shows up like before. So I can't enable it. And when I try to close the Service Control Manager it says to close all property windows but I don't see any. Because of this, when I start up in Win2k server, it shows an error from the Service Control Manager saying "At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use event viewer to examine the event log for details." And I can't get any dialup of network things to work so I can't go online or use the LAN. Also the Add/Remove Programs control panel is all messed up. When I open it, it just shows a window saying Add/Remove Programs and a Close button that is spelled "Clo&se" and nothing else so i can't do anything. Is there any way to fix this without reinstalling win2k? Thank you. I'll greatly appreciate your help.

Reply: (edit)Win2k doesn't have a network control panel. I think these problems r caused because some of the services aren't able to start since some of the services are messed up but not really sure.

Reply: (edit)Try this hack: 1. Install recovery console (run win32 /cmdcons) 2. Boot in recovery console 3. Use the commands in it to switch it on to automatic. Forgot the actual command but typing help should bring a list... I beleive it's called "service" but not sure !
