Hello,
Something strange happened to my Add/Remove Programs control panel. Whenever I open it now, it shows an error message saying, "An unexpected error occured. Object doesn't support this property or method res://appwiz.cpl/default.hta
Line:75"

Any idea on whats wrong and how to fix it? Thank you

In windows 2000, some control panel applets (like add-remove programs), use activex controls. Since this problem could be caused by a bad setup, you'd better boot from Windows 2000 CD and do a repair installation.

It was working before. I believe it was caused by McAfee QuickClean, since it cleans your HD so it probably deleted a crucial file but I want to know how else I can fix it...

One day I backed up my system not knowing what it was. Once I realized what I had done, I deleted all of the back up instead of undoing what I did. In the process I lost some components that allows me to properly remove programs. Some programs can't be removed/uninstalled from the start menu either. What do I need to do.

Try the tip on this link to repair Add/Remove. I haven't tried it, so I can't vouch for it.

I too have the same problem after using Quickclean, and would be very interested in both the actual cause and the solution

I found the best way to fix it... Do upgrade using the windows 2000 cd. To reinstall Windows2k. All programs and settings remain intact. I tried it and it worked. And everything normal and the problem is fixed.

With Alex's help I was able to narrow down the problem to a single registry key. Just import:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.htc]
"Content Type"="text/x-component"

into your registry and that should fix your problem (it worked for me).

Than You, Mr. Bungle (mimicvii)!

This registry key really helped in my case, too! Even without having to install W2K again.
I don't use McAffee but a freeware tool called "RegCleaner" which seems to cause the error.

you guys are way cool. You can always find the answers on the net. I had the same problem with that stupid error. I don't know how to import to the register but I use regedit.exe to begin the edit of the register. Since the key folder .htc did not exist I created it then created the string on the right panel as show above what was show in response 9 (with out the ""). It worked perfect. Alway backup the register before any of this crazy hacking.

question is how does one stop this from happening again. I use Uninstall to clean my HD so I think that is the program that erased the key to start with. The uninstall program has a funtion to stop certain thing from being deleted so I investagate that first.

thanks to all who has come before me.

If you are using McAfee QuickClean be sure to read the instructions first!! This is a very powerful program. Where you have lost info. or registry keys these are however automatically backed up in a compressed file. Open this to restore the deleted info. and presto! your Windows Add/Remove etc. is restored. Don't forget the option to make known to QC which files/ folders you don't want deleted.
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!!!!!!
