I have a problem with my computer display (on a 3-month-old Toshiba Satellite 3000 laptop). Suddenly, I am not able to go above 16 colors, even though I was for a long time able to use 32 colors. When I go to Display in the Control Panel, there is no setting higher than 16 colors. Occasionally my computer will start up and be back to normal again, but most of the time it is this bizarre problem.

I would think that this is a software problem, but because of a bizarre twist in the problem's history I am not sure. It began when I had Windows XP installed on my new Toshiba Satellite (laptop). My company allowed me to erase my hard disk and install Windows 2000, which I hoped might solve the problem. But after only two days, the problem has come back!

Sometimes the display will work, but sometimes it will not. And even when it is working, if I put the computer into hibernation or standby, it will come up with the 16-bit color problem 100% of the time.

I would suspect that this is a software problem, except for the fact that it occured when I had Win XP, and then occured AGAIN after I reinstalled everything with Win 2000.

If you can suggest any solutions, I would appreciate it very much!

Rebecca

When you reinstall the O.S is it a clean reinstall? Meaning did you format the entire drive? My hunch is that you should disable the “Hibernate” option. This has been known to cause some serious problems with various computers.

Try a clean reinstall make sure everything is fine then under "properties" get to this by right clicking on the negative space on your desktop go to "Screen Saver" then look at the bottom and chose "Power", "Power Schemes" tab disable all the "Turn offs...' and "System standby" plus what ever else is there. Then I would suggest going into the "Hibernate" tab and disabling that. It is important to note that this suggestion is for windows 2000.

This should work. I would also like to take this time to let you know what Hibernate is truly doing. It is simulating a crash. This could never be good, something will brake eventually like your video display.

HI Rebecca,

Sounds like a bios problem, toshiba has its own soft-bios installed on all its machines, they do this to stay propritory to the market. Special routing on the board permits certin address's to access memory.
(RE:e0000-ff000) so these adress's may be excluded for reasons of compatability from the 3rd party marketers, (Nvida, sounblaster and so on...)to work properly with the motherboard that is designed just for Toshiba.

I have work on 100's of these laptops, and most of the time when video is involved, its most likly its a bios problem.

BUT---it may just be that your Direct-X is not up to date. Try downloading Direct-X from microsoft first, RE: Ver, 8.1.
http://www.microsoft.com/directx/
it may be that simple, or it just may be a video driver update, try updating the driver.(RE: Nvidia, ATI...so on)

If that does not work, here is the link to the bios update on toshiba's page.
WARNING::::::check your version first by going into the bios, or on the post of the machine. (when it boots)

there are 2 models , this should work for both.

But 1 more thing, using 32bit video will slow your machine, it is not recomended for laptops because of the service that it takes to run, (about 4k and up) 16k is better and you really cant tell by the eye if its 16 or 32. I recommend 16, the machine will run faster.

hope it helps,

mwperigo
