I am trying to install Windows 2000 professional on my system that currently runs Windows 98 perfectly. However, after the system files are loaded and the system goes to start Win2000, I get a blue screen plug and play error message. I have updated to the most current BIOS for my motherboard, installed a new Maxtor 92049U6 hard drive.
I have gathered some other specs on my computer as well. I have 3 cd rom drives with the specs "Atapi Model crd-8320B".

The first thing you want to do before upgrading is check for hardware compatibility. There are two ways to do this. You can check the HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) on the 2000 CD or on microsoft's web site. Or, you can stick the 2000 CD in your CD-ROM and open a command prompt window, change to the \i386 folder on the 2000 CD and type the following command:
winnt32 /checkupgradeonly
This outputs a text file that will list any incompatibilities you may have...and I'm thinking that's the most likely candidate for the problem you're having.
Once you've ruled out incompatibility issues, then you can start looking in other areas....but that is the best place to start.
