Problem reformatting hard drive

Please help - I have to reformat this hard drive TONIGHT (niece leaving with computer in the morning). Computer has alot of problems - i just need to wipe it clean and reload everything however it will not let me reformat the HD - tells me "cannot lock the drive. the volume is still in use". How can I get around this? Thanks very much.

Don't format from within 2000. Download from Seagate.com web site their hard drive utilities. One of the programs is a disk wipe utility. Run this from a boot diskette which can also be downloaded from bootdisk.com.
you can do similar with killdisk. Web search just killdisk for the links.
last but not least you can boot your install cd, start install, wipe the drive then abort out of install.
All of these methods will wipe the drive and make it ready to format by the next OS install.
