Printer/Spool Problem

Comment:

I can't print and the printer that used to be set up in Printers (Control Panel) is missing.

When Windows 2000 boots, the following error is displayed:

SPOOLSV.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.

When I go to Printers in Control Panel and try to Add a printer, the following error is displayed:

Printer operation cannot continue due to a lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable.

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on here? The printer used to work and I haven't added any hardware or software to my system since, nor do I recall modifying any of the settings.

Thanks!

Locate your error logs and see what went wrong with spoolsv (that's what bascially controls the print jobs that you send to the printer). You need to correct that problem before you can do anything with the printers.

The printer in question is a:
A: Hewlett Packard
B: Canon
C: Epson
D: Lexmark
E: None of the above......

And if you guess the correct make, model, and serial number of this guys printer, you can win an all expense paid vacation to Venus!

So get out your crystal balls and take your best guess at what the problem is.

CAN WE HAVE SOME MORE INFO PLEASE!

Thanks for the two replies so far. The printer is an HP 310 deskjet. I don't think that the printer itself is the problem because I can't add any printer in Control Panel. When I click on Add a Printer, it immediately gives me an error that says:

"Printer operation cannot continue due to a lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable."

It would appear to me that the problem is at a higher level than the printer driver since I can't add any printer.

I looked at the log files that were modified/created when I booted. The ones that changed and their contents are:

WBEMCORE
Core physically unloaded!

WinMgmt
Core is being shut down by WinMgmt.exe, it returned 0 x 0

wmiadap
Performance library status is corrupt.

DrWtsn32
Application exception occurred:
App: spoolsv.exe
When:
Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

The DrWtsn log file also contains a dump of the status of various applications, but I don't know how to decipher it. It is a bunch of binary or hex data. It looks like the print spooler program wasn't able to access a file?

Thanks again for the help.

1) I would first defrag .
2) probably (?) 1) isnot possible because
you do not have enough free disk space
(>= 20 %)
3) so if 2) is ok goto 4)
4) defrag and do this often (>>> then in W98 and below).
5)for the HP 310 deskjet i cannot find
a W2K driver (on HP-site)so this can very well
be an impossibility to print with this
printer in W2K !

please let me know how you are after these
steps Good luck sky40912@skynet.be

Thanks, Theo. I ran defrag and the problem didn't go away. The drive has about 100 MB free. Even though that isn't a lot of space, it's actually more than I had a few weeks ago when the printer was working. That reminded me that to free up space, I converted the drive from FAT to NTFS. I don't recall if the printer problem started when I converted the file system, but it is possible. Could this have caused the problem, and if so, how do I correct it? I guess that I could reinstall Windows, but that seems rather drastic if there is an easier solution. Thanks!

The printer is not supported by Windows 2000. You MAY be able to sneak around it by using a different driver, but the original will cause you problems I bet. Also, you may not have enough disk space if all you've got is 100MBs free (your pagefile may be taking up most of that depending on your amount of memory).
I'd try contacting HP to see if they can tell you for sure if the printer will work in some way with Windows 2000.

I can't add any printer, so the specific printer that I am using isn't the problem. When I click on Add Printer in Control Panel, Windows issues the following error:

Printer operation cannot continue due to a lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable.

This particular problem cannot be caused by my printer or print driver because I can't even add a printer. I suppose that 100 MB isn't enough free disk space, but that wouldn't explain why the printer worked when I had only 30 MB free. I converted the file system to NTFS to free up space, and now I have 100 MB free. Why would the printer have worked with only 30 MB free but now it won't work with 100 MB free? I suspect that a file got corupted when I converted the file system, but I don't know for sure. That could be related to the error "Performance library status is corrupt.", although that doesn't sound much like it is related to the Print subsystem. I was hoping that somebody is familiar with this problem so I don't have to reinstall Windows 2000.

Just curious if the performance of Windows will be degraded if I compress the disk. That would free up almost a gigabyte.

Thanks again for all the replies.

did you try stopping and restarting your print spooler?

open control panel
open administrative tools
open component services
open services(local)
scroll down to "print spooler"
right click for drop down menu.
click stop
after it stops click restart

I'm encountering the same problem. The one change between today (not working) and yesterday (working) is that I installed Visio 2000 yesterday. But even then, the printer worked afterward. It even worked this morning. Then, when requesting a second print job, BAM! All done.

Microsoft has a page on this, claiming it is the Bitwise program that is causing it, but I do not have that installed.

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q257/8/59.ASP

I am running W2K, am printing to a Ricoh that has worked for the last 2 months, and am VERY frustrated.

So you're NOT alone!

I had a similar problem with a W2K Pro machine after loading the print driver for a Lexmark inkjet printer that had only 98/NT/ME drivers available. I loaded the ME driver and spoolsv.exe crashed every time it started. I found the following page useful (although it refers to Bitware not Lexmark).
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q257/8/59.ASP
After removing the offending key and installing the NT4 driver, it runs like a dream. Perhaps a similar issue has occurred due to the Visio install?

I found the same article as you in Microsoft's knowledge base.

http://computing.net/windows2000/wwwboard/forum/13760.html

Have you tried uninstalling Visio to see if your problem goes away? If that is the problem hopefully Visio will provide an upgrade that fixes it. Bitware has an update but they want to charge for it. I guess you can't expect much for free since I got the Bitware software "free" when I bought my modem. Still, I think they should provide updated drivers, especially when it crashes the entire print system in Windows. Bitware wouldn't get a nickle of my business!

Good luck fixing the problem with your printer.

I ran into the same problem after I installed Bitware, but until I read these messages I didn't realize it was the Bitware that did it. I did notice that the Bitware fax from within an app no longer worked and contacted the company which currently sells Bitware. Since my copy of Bitware was bundled with a modem, the tech support person told me that I should contact the hardware manufacturer to get an updated version which will work with Windows 2k. My modem is from ActionTec - I emailed them last week(after getting tired of waiting on hold) and I'm still waiting to hear from them.
Good luck!

My computer started having this problem last night. When the system boots, I get the message "Spoolsv.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You need to restart the program."

I can manually start the spooler service, but get the same message when I try to print.

I also noticed that my printer (Brother HL-1240) is no longer listed under printers.

The only help I could find on MS's website relates to the Bitware software, which I do not have.

The only installations I have recently perform are

1) installing the aspi drivers so that I can use CDRWIN

2) installing CDRWIN

3) installing WIN2k SP2

I don't think it is printer related, but rather some type of driver conflict. It's driving me nuts!!

Please have a look at the following site. It provides a good answer to your question as well as the resolution. It seems Bitware causes the problem!

Good luck!

Did anyone ever find a solution for the "printer subsytem is unavailable" error? I don't even have Bitware (I checked the Task Manager to verify) and this problem is occuring.
